What is the idear behind that decision? I really cant see any advantages of not providing basic servers in the PowerPack. If you really want to create a desktop-only distribution then plz call it StupidUnseableNoobishPackNobodyWants and not PowerPack, that gives the impression you get everything you need for a fullfeatured GNU/Linux system!!! Welcome Noobiva or better Commerciva: If you dont pay like a professional enterprise, you wont get a sh** for your money. More and more I get the impression that this is last release for me that I financially contributed to: Absolutely lousy QA, insufficient communication (this topic has been mentioned on cooker weeks ago), and totally uncomprehensible board decisions!

What happens if you try to upgrade (via CD) powerpack installation with servers that are now removed?

Hey, this is just great! I need the postgresql you removed... Anyway, I am still waiting for the powerpack DVD image... and waiting... still nothing? nope... and waiting... At least the "Information page about Mandriva Linux 2006" on qa.mandriva.com could be correct about the date.

I thought these kind of things should be discussed on the Club area!. I could understand the reasons, I could also understand the decission, but I can not understand the way. Remember: We're supporting you!.

The reason behind all of this is simple : it will incite people to buy powerpack+ boxes or subscribe to a higher level. But I don't understand why all this flame about it... There's so many things more important than this... Servers were on the on-line isos, now they are on the on-line repositories, that's all. And you still can build a LAMP server from isos : apache, mysql, php are still inside.

yo yoho, the uroar behind all this is because people don't want to increase their tco (if you know what that is). as it stands right now it's $132 for silver and $660 for gold. now i don't know about everyone else, but i'm struggling mo. to mo. i have to subcribe during tax time because that's the only time i can afford it, and if i have to increase my tco an extra 528 dollars PER YEAR then i might as well just go back to microsoft. just because a user has an internet connection doesn't mean they want to wait on a download. i am on dsl and it takes my 9 hours to download a dvd image at full throttle (160 Kbs) and if it doesn't want to download at full throttle up to 3 days, and now you're telling us to just get it off the internet. don't think so pal how about u quit microsoftizing and give the working man that which he pays for.

As a silver member, I am disappointed. Many packages that I use and which have been included for a long time have been excludedin 2006. Examples are XFCE, PHP4, ERIC3 etc. Most LAMP applications still run on PHP4 so why did they ship only PHP5 ? And they included about 250MB of worthless intel compilers - WHY ? Its not like you cannot compile with GCC and if someone needs inhell compilers, they can download separately. And another probably 100MB of worthless HSF/HCI conexant modem drivers that do not even have a license ! I can download the same crap from linuxant. Same about NCIDIA drivers. Speaking of drivers, why does mandrake package them for each version of their kernel ? Why not install them as NVIDIA themselves would - one version that links at install time and save space on DVD ? I also like ERIC3 and pgadmin, the only decent open source python IDE and postgres administration tool.

Seems like the right decision to me - and yes, I also pay taxes (european, not the tax-lite US version). You pays your money and you makes your choice (free market economic model). All this abuse from crac seems only to indicate that he's using the wrong platform - if you're going elsewhere anyway, don't let us slow you down ;-)

Remember that from the start the full distribution was not on the whole set of CDs/DVDs. Now the mirrors contain the equivalent of 4GB of software... so it is impossible to put the whole distribution on media support (maybe one day it will be distributed on Blu-Ray stuf...) However, whichever your membership level is, everybody had access to the complete distribution on the mirrors. If you want the complete distribution and updates, just add the main and contrib media to your urpmi base. The easiest way is to use the easyURPMI interface: http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ and voila ! You have access to all packages (around 6000, 4GB)

Well it seems that being a "Standard" member is like getting Mandriva-Lite!! It seems that the club has become the whipping boy for this Distro. It's kind of disappointing to see such a great distro make such drastic swings back and forth. I don't really have a problem with downloading the packages mentioned. However, the way this decision was made is rather telling. Since the change in upper level management I don't believe the club has had any kind of say in any decision concerning this distro. I believe that was one of the original premises of the club. It’s a sad but prevalent trend with Mandriva and its only getting more common. In the past month I had to renew my membership and had all kinds of trouble. In that time I downloaded and really took a good look at OpenSuse. They seem to be what the Mandriva club started out to be. Their product life is 2 years as opposed to Mandriva’s 18 months. It might be worth a serious look since its free. I am considering moving the site I run for Mandriva support to support both Suse and Mandriva. Then eventually moving to only on RPM based distro and Slackware. PDR60

This shouldn't be a problem for me anyways. I still dl the 6 cd set anyways and create my own DVD. This way if I do an install on a machine that dosen't have a DVD drive I can use the CD set and if it has a DVD I can use the single DVD. Besides I only need a cd to boot and do a start network install. Since I mirror all required direstorys anyways on my server. The server will have all the required rpms to build the server. By having all of Mandriva/PLF/pbone.net when I build a system with all available games/multimedia/office sw for somebody I can load an entire system in less than 3 hr. A local lan install is a whole lot faster than an internet install.

Anyone who thinks it's really important to have CDs containing more than what is on the 4 base ISOs is able to download the rpms from the repository, and burn their own CDs (assuming K3b is in the base set :-) ). You might even be able to sell copies to people who want the convenience of CDs, for far less than the cost of upgrading one's Club membership. CDs and DVDs impose physical limits on what comprises your "distribution", those with reasonable Internet feeds are not and should not be bound by those limitations. So long as the packages available online are still assembled with the same care as for those on the ISOs, I don't see the problem. Having used Kbuntu and Knoppix, both of which provide only ONE iso and demand you download the rest, I think Mandriva has made a reasonable compromise given its resources and challenges.

Some points: one, this is obviously not just about the Club. These are the same products everyone else gets, so people who regularly buy the PowerPack (there's a lot) will see the same thing. Two, yes, this was discussed a couple of weeks ago on the Cooker list. It didn't seem to me that it was likely to affect anyone much until actual release time, though, so I put the story up on the Club just prior to release. Three, this doesn't really say anything about any 'direction' we're going in. PowerPack has always in fact been targetted at desktop power users, at least theoretically, with this release the package selection has been tweaked to reflect that. That's all. hcimodem drivers on the CDs - of course _you_ can download them, because you don't have an hcimodem. For someone whose sole internet connection is via an hcimodem, obviously downloading them is going to be somewhat more of a pain :) generally speaking it's more important to have every possible driver on the CDs, so people's hardware will work as well as possible out of the box. I don't think downloading from an MDV mirror via urpmi is equivalent to just downloading from any old where. In fact, once you have the urpmi media set up (which is easier than ever now), it's almost indistinguishable from installing off one of the CDs. PHP 5 as the default is a decision made by Oden, the packager for Apache and related stuff. I think he decided a tipping point had been reached where most stuff now runs on PHP 5, and the switch had to be made sometime, so why not now. PHP 4 is not dropped from 2006, though - it's in contrib, and you'll find it on the mirrors (same goes for Apache 1, although that needs some hand tweaking to make it work). vasmuppa8u, Xfce has not been removed from 2006. What will happen if you try and upgrade from an installation with postgresql installed - the existing package will be left in place (this is what happens in all such situations). It may work, it may not. You can then set up an urpmi media and update it via urpmi or rpmdrake. As I mentioned in the post, the /official FTP tree will open Oct 13th. For now, though, if you really need a package, you will be safe to use the /devel/2006.0 tree on the mirrors. It is out of date on a couple of unimportant packages, and already has two changed packages since 2006 official (dmraid and eagle, both to fix significant bugs), but it should not cause any problems to use as a temporary media until the /official tree hits the mirrors. Hope that clears up some points.

As usual there are 2 sides to this story, and then some. For Mandriva, I can't imagine that they expect Silver Members to upgrade to Gold - spend more on a one year membership than some people do in 10 years on any and all software combined?? That said, maybe there is this 3rd side to the story, who knows. Anyway, the official Mandriva story is that there is not enough space. The regular user reactions vary (as usual) from apologetic to inflammatory to 'in flames'. Nobody finds this a good thing per se, some people just don't find it a very bad thing. The idea is that it can all be fixed by just setting up urpmi and getting the relevant packages from the web. Ok, so it's not the end of the world. On the other hand, the upset members have the feeling that Mandriva powerpack is now less functional than before. IT IS NOW LESS CONVENIENT, and we all prefer to be lazy and comfy instead of downloading stuff separately. The point of Mandriva is to provide a service, a distribution that is well put together and easy to use, not just for beginners and desktop users, but for any and all Linux users - including those power users who just can't be bothered to do more than strictly necessary. By stripping certain valued packages (e.g. XFCE?!!) the Powerpack is now less useful/less convenient, so the only way I can put this differently is: the service that Silver Members enjoyed has now gotten worse. I would like to see if Mandriva can react to this and correct it, maybe by polling which packages could really go (as got mentioned, heaps of space are taken up by Intel compilers, but maybe if those get taken out, others will complain). I don't have an issue with packages taken out of the dvd for space reasons, but with Mandriva acting before thinking and at least communicating, and coming across as if they don't respect their financial supporters.

As usual, AdamW is on top of things, where he got to be while I was typing and trying to formulate a non-inflammatory response to this situation.... If anybody gets a raise at Mdv it should be you Adam... ;-) PS I don't know what I'm doing here, I'm actually not using any of the packages under discussion.... :-)))

I'm using the x-64 version of 2006. Until now, I have not been able to install the postgreSQL server. Which medium should I add in order to install the software?
