2007 release plans information: 64-bit edition delayed slightly

#includeResource("Skel.ArticleHeader") We'd like to give all our members some information regarding the launch of 2007.

The whole release process was put on hold on Tuesday (just before the planned launch) because of a major driver issue that appeared on x86-64 during final testing. We were at the final stage of media validation, but we decided to stop the process to sort out the problem reports we were gathering.

On Wednesday, we narrowed down the problem to the x86_64 packages, but it became clear that we wouldn't be able to fix the issue on the day, so we decided to investigate the possibility of a split release. After looking at our statistics and asking a sample of leading Club members for their opinions, we decided it was acceptable to launch with 32-bit only, giving us the time needed to improve the x86_64 edition.

So on Wednesday, Warly incorporated some of the packages that we already had accumulated as updates, after the cooker freeze. We restarted the whole countdown to release, rebuilding and re-validating all media and installation scenarios.

The 32-bit edition is now back on track and will be available to Store customers and Club members early next week. Check the Mandriva web site for official availability dates.

The 64-bit edition is now getting all our attention. We think we have found a good fix for the driver problem, and we will re-start the validation process tomorrow. We do not expect any other major issues to appear, and plan to release the 64-bit editions 2-3 days after the 32-bit editions.

We hope you understand this situation and won't mind waiting a few more days to get your editions of Mandriva Linux 2007.

Hi, well it's better be little later, and not buggy :) Will Mandriva One Edition be cabable of install both in 32 and 64 bit as far now? I mean: Will the 32-bits versions run on x64 too?

awilliamson | 29.09.2006 at 12:44 AM
Yeah, all the 32-bit editions can run on 64-bit machines no trouble.

belkdriva | 29.09.2006 at 01:33 AM
Great! Thanks awilliamson for your early answer :)

judland_sk | 29.09.2006 at 05:57 AM
In my opinion, Mandriva management made the right decision.

I'm looking forward to 2007 next week. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication!

2 very good decisions :
  • delaying a few days for a better distro
  • announcing & explaining what happends.
Mandriva ++

TH-Gemini | 29.09.2006 at 09:25 AM
I completely agree.

Although I am waiting for the 64 bit edition for my computers, it was definitely the right decision to delay it as I prefer to wait a few more days to avoid annoying bugs that would make our mandriva life annoying for on whole year until 2008. I wouldn't even mind to wait a few more weeks if it was necessary. Stability over precipitation is the key.

Good luck with the debugging ! :-)

sitor | 29.09.2006 at 11:15 AM
Indeed, impressing progress for Mandriva in the attitude department. Not only the good decision in favour of user experience, but even a clear communication without the need of users being mad about not getting one first.

Keep it up that way!

Thanks Adam. You're doing a great job.

XAVIER_MOUCHERON | 29.09.2006 at 01:13 PM

Melao | 29.09.2006 at 03:01 PM

stormi | 29.09.2006 at 03:03 PM

Grimpeur | 29.09.2006 at 04:58 PM

Alexandre_Martins | 29.09.2006 at 06:17 PM
Concordo, melhor esperar.

Patrick_JAILLET_146 | 29.09.2006 at 06:39 PM

luismago | 29.09.2006 at 06:47 PM
You have taken the best decision, IMHO. And even better, we are grateful for clarifying the situation. Bravo for the Mandriva Team!

_Panta | 29.09.2006 at 07:01 PM
Thx to communicate about. It is wise, better to wait a few more you get time enough to fix correctly known important bugs. I did have wxPython probleme with the x86_64 cooker, fixed by: #cp /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/wx.pth /usr/lib64/python2.4/site-packages/wx.pth

jeansagi | 29.09.2006 at 08:24 PM
Si si!

Although I cant wait to put my hands on the 2007 I even can wait a few weeks more to get good product.

As we say in spanish: "Ya esperado lo más, esperemos lo menos" ;) .

nmset | 29.09.2006 at 11:20 PM
2006_X64 has been as great as 2006_X32. X64 users are not seen as secondary, as commented by one user here. Mandriva has made the right choice. Congratulations and keep up the great job !

jjorge | 30.09.2006 at 10:29 AM

jjorge | 30.09.2006 at 10:31 AM
Off-topic, but could someone explain me the new repository organisation? Imean, in main mirrors, we have release directories, testing, and updates. Easy URMI isn't aware of this, and I've found nowhere what each directory means. This is really anoying!

imr | 30.09.2006 at 11:41 AM

roger_3920 | 30.09.2006 at 11:51 AM

awilliamson | 30.09.2006 at 12:10 PM
Take a look at http://qa.mandriva.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/MirrorStructure and http://qa.mandriva.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/SoftwareMedias (which is actually currently ongoing; it's a page dbarth created to reflect an ongoing internal discussion about exactly who will be able to upload what to each repository, and how we're going to adjust various bits of software to suit). Once we have a policy nailed down I'll let the Easy URPMI guys know so they can adjust their site accordingly.

blueeagle | 30.09.2006 at 05:51 PM
I am curious to know if we will still perfect that super cool dvd we had in testing that allowed a 64 bit and 32 bit machine to be set up and configured from the same dvd media? Will the 64 bit release when done include the 32 bit installation files? If not are there plans to reintegrate the both of them in one media for this release? Will we be able to have the dual installer with the powerpacks?

blueeagle | 30.09.2006 at 05:52 PM
I am on limited bandwidth internet and would perfer to download only one image for both my 32 and 64 bit machines.

Eric_3353 | 01.10.2006 at 12:37 AM
Thank you, Mandriva, for keeping us informed. I prefer to wait a bit for a robust release. I am pleased that the user community seems to agree.

awilliamson | 01.10.2006 at 08:49 AM
We do have a dual-arch image for the final Powerpack, but it doesn't fit on a single-layer DVD - you need a dual layer. The Powerpack box set will have one, dual-arch, dual-layer DVD. We didn't plan to release the ISO to the Club because we figure many people don't have dual layer burners (and those of us who _do_ know that the discs are still ridiculously expensive - one DL disc costs a lot more than two SL discs). If we get a lot of demand we could change that, though. I think we're doing a dual-arch, single-layer DVD image for the final edition of Free.

Loonacy | 01.10.2006 at 11:48 AM
Most of my installs are over a network from an Apache server that has the ISO mounted into the www directory. For me, an ISO including both 32 and 64 bit versions would be appreciated, but I don't think downloading 2 ISOs and having 2 installation directories would be much of a problem. The reason I bring this up is because I think most people who would want the 2 versions on one disk is because they want to install on multiple computers, and the network install is the easiest way to do so.

schattenmann | 02.10.2006 at 11:11 AM
i as well look forward to have a late but perfect 2007 :)

dbhost | 02.10.2006 at 04:01 PM
I am pleasantly suprised with this change. Mandrake / Mandriva has in the past had a bad habit of not communicating rationale for abrupt changes. And far too many glitches have slipped through the cracks. This appears to me to be a two step improvement for Mandriva.
    1. Stopping release and fixing an issue before the "final" tag gets affixed to a certain release. Not everything can possibly be caught before release, but fixing the issues that are known is good form, and good business.
#2. Clearly communicating, and even involving club members, and customers in the process. Should we do this? Okay, yes we should. Okay here it is blah blah blah… Makes me as a customer feel more connected and personally invested in the process, and the product. Thus Mandriva is now getting customers more deeply involved with their software, and buying loyalty. Smart move. Hope to see more like this!

kassad | 02.10.2006 at 05:41 PM

gerlos_it | 02.10.2006 at 11:50 PM
Good job! It's important to tell the people exactly what is going on! I'm sure no one will mind waiting some days, waiting for the problem solved. Obviously stability it's more important...

Just to know… and to tell 100% of the things to the people… what was the buggy driver?

As acient Romans said "Ad maiora!" gerlos

Bonjour a tous.

jeansagi | 03.10.2006 at 03:08 PM
Hi, today I checked and have these torrent DVD's: Mandriva PWP 2007 DVD x86_64, Mandriva Discovery 2007 DVD x86_64, Mandriva Discovery 2007 DVD i586. Which of they are single layer and wich are Double layer? Since I'm (and possible others) are not interested in 64 bits, Is there a possibility to have torrrent of the comple PowerPack for i586 (x86)? OTOH these CD torrents also appear: Mandriva PWP 2007 CD5-6 x86_64, Mandriva PWP 2007 CD1-4 x86_64, Mandriva Discovery 2007 CD i586, Mandriva Discovery 2007 CD x86_64, Mandriva PWP 2007 CD1-4 i586, Mandriva PWP 2007 CD5-6 i586. It is possible to combine the CD's of the last two torrents (PWPCD1-4 i586 and PWP CD5-6 i586) to form a Single Layer DVD for the complete PowerPack i586? I know that having a dual-arch double layer DVD is a real convenience… but not for me (and possible others) because I dont have double a layer DVD (and can't get someone right now). J.
