Digg!

We're proud to announce that Mandriva Linux 2008 is now available for download via BitTorrent, and on the network of public mirror servers.

The result of six months of heavy development and testing, 2008 includes all the latest software and many enhancements over previous Mandriva Linux releases. You will find KDE 3.5.7 and the new GNOME 2.20 already integrated, a solid kernel 2.6.22.9 with fair scheduling support, OpenOffice.org 2.2.1, cutting-edge 3D-accelerated desktop courtesy of Compiz Fusion 0.5.2, Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.6, and everything else you've come to expect from the latest Mandriva Linux release. We have integrated a reworked hardware detection sub-system, with support for a lot of new devices (particularly graphics cards, sound cards and wireless chips). Also, the addition of new features and ongoing improvements to the renowned Mandriva tools continues, including a wizard to import Windows documents and settings, the new network configuration center, and improvements to the Mandriva software management tools.

You can read about the most exciting new features of Mandriva Linux 2008 in depth in the Release Tour. The Release Notes contain important information on changes from previous releases. The Errata will contain information on any future known issues and solutions for them.

Mandriva Linux 2008 was developed by the Mandriva development community, based around the Cooker development distribution. This open, community-driven development system has been in place since 1998, making it one of the longest-standing open source development communities around. The involvement of the Mandriva development community helps us to make Mandriva Linux one of the largest, most up-to-date, integrated, internationalized and standardized distributions available, for which we thank our contributors greatly. We're proud of the standardization efforts included in Mandriva Linux 2008, including support for the Freedesktop.org XDG menu, user directories and icon theme specifications.

Mandriva Linux 2008 is available for download free of charge at the Mandriva website. The One installation CD is the recommended download with everything you need to start using Mandriva Linux 2008: it comes with a full KDE desktop and application suite, NVIDIA and ATI proprietary video card drivers, Intel wireless firmware, Adobe Flash and Sun Java browser plugins, all included.

Enjoy your brand new Mandriva Linux 2008 system!

Hi Adam and all the contributors to Mandriva,

Congratulations on the release of Mandriva 2008. I have been running 2008 as an early seeder for a day or two, and I like it. Your efforts at standardisation and reliability have definately paid off. I thought that 2007.1 "Spring" was great, and I am looking forward to getting to know 2008 better, the contributions, updates and backports, the forums, and the improvements which I have read are coming to the Mandriva community.

Good luck and success to Mandriva.

Great work guys!!!!!!!!

I have been using RC2 and PowerPack as I'm an early seeder and it really rocks :D. Great work you really did it, and I thought I had seen all the best from mdv. I was completely wrong.

I hope you the best with this new release, it's really as good as any other distro and even better. It's good for starters and it's very good for advanced users like me,

Cheers Manuel

The Good: I like the new look! This version is really very pretty.
  • It feels very snappy
The Bad: There are a few rather bad things as well:
  • The mcc is not wholly translated (I use Swedish, and about half the menu items are still in English)
  • The K-menu is still very cluttered. The absence of a "System" level in the menu makes you look everywhere. "Tools" is not a very intuitive top level for this cathegory (but, of course, I' ve mentioned this before)
  • "Totem" is a strange default choice for video player if you're a KDE user like me.
The Ugly:
  • NFS doesn't work properly (can't find other NFS volumes on the network - sharing works fine, though)
On the whole, what I found during the last day makes it seem like a very nice distro, but the NFS problem makes it unusable for me. I hope I don't have to wait until spring…

Totem is default in the Powerpack as it includes the Fluendo media codecs, which are Gstreamer-based. There's no really usable Gstreamer-based KDE media player (Kaffeine's gstreamer backend sucks), so we had to go with Totem. It's easy enough to switch to Kaffeine if you don't care about the codecs, and Kaffeine's the default in One and Free.

NFS works fine for me, I mount an NFS share from my HTPC (both systems running 2008) all the time. How exactly are you trying to access it? Post in the forums, I'm sure we can help.

I've been using "One" on my Desktop computer for half an hour, and it's really a good job ! Everything seems to be fine so far. But I do have questions : is it normal that "settings:/" can't be reached from konqueror side-bar ? What is the way to set the mouse roll as a mean to rotate the cube on Compiz-fusion ?

Forgot to say...: I'm presently posting with "One" using the LiveCD mode :p

Congratulations on the release and the free club. I was wondering when a GNOME ONE CD could be expected?

rhickers | 14.10.2007 at 10:24 PM
So I re-joined the Club so I could use ftp/http. Recalling that I installed 2007.1 directly from the DVD iso on my hard drive (I can't burn to DVD), I downloaded the 2008 PowerPack DVD iso. I've searched high and low, but for the life of me, I can't find the instructions and the miniscule iso to let me do the install. I was surprised it wasn't linked from the main 2008 page.
