Mandriva Linux 2009 Beta 2 released

Digg!

Mandriva is proud to announce the release of Mandriva Linux 2009 Beta 2 'okapi'. This beta includes a completely new installer for the Free (and, in the final release, Powerpack) edition, and is testing the Fedora system-config-printer printer configuration tool as an alternative to printerdrake. The new beta also brings Firefox 3, OpenOffice.org 3.0 beta, and support for the ethernet adapter used in many new Eee (and other netbook) models. As always, Mandriva reminds you not to use pre-releases in any critical situation; install them only on a test system or partition, or in a virtual machine. Additionally, we strongly discourage using this pre-release to upgrade from any earlier release of Mandriva Linux, as the transition process from KDE 3 to KDE 4 is not yet fully implemented and you are likely to end up with an unusable system. Please make sure to read the Errata and Release Notes, and file any bugs not covered in those pages on Bugzilla.

Why is delaying the One version of the MDV 2009.0 beta 2 version? There's only FreeMini and Free on the servers. it will be relased in another date? I'm just too impatient? :P

After 24 hours downloading Beta2 DVD I had a sad experience. The md5sum check failed. :(

Downloading huge files like Beta2 DVD using ftp or http have this king of problem almost all the time.

Why not torrent? If I had downloaded this DVD using torrent, I was not facing this problem now. Torrent check block by block.

If you upload a torrent now, I can just ask to Ktorrent check my corrupted downloaded DVD file, find the bad block and download just this blocks, not another 24 hours for a full 4 Gb file.

Think about this. Give this chance to us, just a torrent, it's so easy. And better, I can download this file by ftp and seed with ktorrent. ;) So easy.

After having inspected the live version I have now installed Mdv 2009 Beta 2 for my daily work at home (mainly reading mail (web mail), browsing internet and doing a little experimental programming in C++). And I must say I'm quite satisfied. Everything work very nice, The new KDE 4.1 looks and works fine. All hardware installed flawlessly. Both printer including scanner (HP C4380), graphics card, sound, joystick etc.

Although, here are some observations I made during installation. Please bear over with me if this should go elsewhere:

  • During installation I the scan frequency is a little too low, which gives flicker on the screen (Nvidia GT8500 on a Philips 109B). But else the new installation look and like is much better than before.
  • The system did not shut down correctly after installation. It ended with a "Failed to unmount some filesystems" and kept hanging there. The one that didn't unmount was /mnt
  • I don't think its good that administrator password is needed when installing a new printer
  • Why is printer set up to print out in letter format? During installation I stated that I live in Denmark. In all Europe we use A4 (Great Britain?)
  • When I open Changelog or Files in the installer a huge file is downloaded even though the rpm might be rather small. Can't this discrepancy be minimised?
  • Why doesn't the Win key work? I prefer using the keyboard over using the mouse.
  • I have installed Eclipse-CDT from the installer. First of all I do not understand why I need to install tomcat, ant, eclipse-rct, eclipse-swt and a busload of other rpm's not at all used by CDT. When I install directly from eclipse I just unpach eclipse and the CDT.
  • Eclipse-CDT does not work. It is not possible to create a new C++ project from the wizard. Apparently CDT is not functional at all

Where is RC1? According to the release schedule today was the day! I don't mind if its late, just a little news would be nice for those like myself have been counting down the days.

RC1 is available, but there isn't an article posted here yet. See http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/2009.0_RC_1 for info and links to downloads.

cheers
