Mandriva Linux 2009 plans announced

Mandriva Linux 2009 comes a step closer to reality today with the unveiling of the release schedule and the technical specifications. All this information can be found on the Mandriva Linux 2009 Development page on the Mandriva Wiki. The schedule includes two alphas, two betas, and two release candidates, prior to the final release in early October 2008. The first alpha release is scheduled for June 25th - just a week away. The technical specifications are based on input from both the community and Mandriva staff, with each item assigned to a specific maintainer and given a priority level. Some of the more significant items include:

  • Improved boot time
  • Optional automatic removal of 'orphans' (no longer required packages) in the package management tools
  • The use of the increasingly popular and fast-maturing PackageKit and PolicyKit technologies
  • Improvements to the Mandriva Windows migration and parental control tools
  • A live distribution upgrade mode for MandrivaUpdate
  • A new design for the installer
  • Migration to KDE 4, OpenOffice.org 3, and Firefox 3

pourquoi ne migrer vers firefox 3 seulement avec mandriva 2009 ?

Je pense qu'on verra tout de même une version de firefox 3 pour Mandriva 2008.1 (j'ai bien une version 2.0.0.14 sur ma spring et sur ma 2008.0). Il faut croire cependant que la version 3 de firefox sera la version de base de ce navigateur pour la 2009.0. Thanks for the news Mr Williamson!

KDE 4 ! J'espère avoir encore la possibilité d'avoir KDE 3.5.9 et/ou KDE 4 ! Car pour le moment, d'après mes essais (sur Fedora 9 et Kubuntu 8.04) de cette version KDE, KDE 4 n'est pas vraiment abouti ! Plutôt une regression (même si j'imagine facilement les problèmes techniques) : perte du glisser/déposer, personnalisation réelle du bureau impossible, pas de localisation (pour le moment ?), centre de contrôle KDE non achevé (des fonctions ne sont pas activables), perte de l'arborescence dans les explorateurs de fichiers (Dolphin comme GWenView) !!!! Pour le moment, malgré ses promesses purement esthétiques, KDE 4 ne convaincra pas un puriste de Windows (même si ce n'est peut-être pas le but) !

Vivement KDE 4.1 !!!

Ou alors, pour moi ce sera XFCE ou Gnome !

Pour moi, avoir KDE4.1 serait néanmoins très intéressant comme bureau KDE par défaut. Bien évidemment, il est (pour le moment, et encore...) plutôt différent de la branche 3 de KDE, mais vu la base, même s'il diffère (quelque peu) dans son fonctionnement et dans ses options, il est vraiment très prometteur. Après s'il se démarque d'une démarche plus windosienne, ce n'est pas forcément une mauvaise chose, du moment que tout tombe sous la main quand on en a besoin. Ca donne une identité propre plus marquée. J'ai un PC où j'utilise KDE4 et avec Dolphin et Nepomuk, ca me convient déjà beaucoup. Il ne manque plus qu'un peu de maturité et c'est l'utilisant qu'on le fera avancer! Mandriva rocks! Vivement 2009.0

Hoping to see much more enhanced and new tools from Mandriva barracks :) Please include Banshee as default Media Player if possible.. Also remove Totem from KDE and enhance Boot Speed of Mandriva :D

I think that stability should be the top-priority for this release. The 2008.0 and 2008.1 releases had a lot of problems. For several systems I'm back to 2007.1! I hope that 2009.0 will be as good as the old Mandrake/Mandriva versions were.

I agree with Elbers comment. Stability should be the issue. Have been facing many problems with 2008.0 and 2008.1. Hope 2009.0 will be much better.
