Digg!

The first beta of Mandriva Linux 2008, codenamed Cassini, is now available. The release notes are available here. A guide to major new features (some of which are not yet implemented in this beta) is available here, and the detailed technical specifications are available here. This beta is available only as a three CD Free edition (containing no non-free software or drivers) for the x86-32 architecture, with a traditional installer. Future betas will be available in One live / install CD hybrid editions with proprietary drivers, and in x86-64 versions.

Oooo! I get first comment!

CDs burnt and I'm getting ready to install it. One initial comment: it still refers to itself as 2007.1 Spring on installation. This is slightly confusion.

2008.0 and BETA prominently displayed would be nice.

I'll wait for the One Live versions. It's easier for me to test the distro on my ASUS notebook, like I do for Kubuntu.

Please remark that three links on the "http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandriva/2008.0/Development/Beta1" namely "Writing CD and DVD images" and "Spring Errata" point to strange page saying; "Login required to edit". Maybe somebody at Mandriva should correct this.

"Writing CD and DVD images" is still incorrect

It might not be the correct place to do this, but still I would like to make Mandriva users aware that a poll is going on at http://www.desktoplinux.com/cgi-bin/survey/survey.cgi concerning 2007 desktop market survey. Seen in the light of Mandrivas dramatically falling interest in the public (from no 2 to no 9 in just two years according to distrowatch) it would be nice to see that there still are a few Mandriva users out there.

HansJ, After being a club member for five years, Mandriva has nicely used my funds to move toward the corporate world and ignore the individual user. Now that I have x64 system that Mandrake still considers to be the second class citizen of the computers (Note the Beta version starts with only the 32 bit system), I am going to move to another distribution.

Speedychet, did you read all the announce. it say: Future betas will be available in One live / install CD hybrid editions with proprietary drivers, and in x86-64 versions.

It is only Beta 1, be patient.
