Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring CD versions: June

#includeResource("Skel.ArticleHeader")

Many users have been asking us about the lack of CD versions of the Free and Powerpack editions of Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring. These versions are currently being created and tested and will be made available as soon as they pass testing. UPDATE: The CD versions should be tested and made available in June.

Generating and testing CD versions is a more complex operation than generating DVD versions due to the multi-disc nature of CD versions. If we had decided to release both DVD and CD versions simultaneously, the release would have been delayed. Based on previous discussion with Club members and other users, we felt that the proportion of users able to use the DVD and One versions, or to use other installation methods such as network installation, was sufficiently high to justify releasing these versions first and the CD versions later. We understand the frustration of those of you who do need the CD versions, and will release them as soon as possible. In the mean time, you can see if using the One edition or doing a network install - see this page for instructions - is sufficient for your situation.

As long as we can get the CD versions I don't mind the delay. Thank you.

Really? It looks more like evadable than fact. When WarLy was here, every beta version had CD version. So if CD causes delay, why did we have time to produce CDs of beta versions before?

I personally believe this explanation is disingenuous at best. Had this statement been true, they would have included this explanation when the announcement was made. Had it simply been over sight, then why did it take so very long, and so many complaints before this announcement was made.

This is not the behavior of an "open" and honest company… And, does any member actually recall being in discussions with Mandriva concerning the release of DVD editions before CD editions? I have my doubts about that as well…

I'm glad the DVDs came out first. CDs seem like a throwback, and I can see why they dropped them.

So, now they decide to release the CDs, and people are still whining

Krogtwil 29.04.2007 I downloaded the dvd version but could only use the virtual installation. When trying to do live install, after half an hour of working the process halted and nothing was installed. Nevertheless of sevaral messages to mandriva.com and mandriva store, etc I did not get any response. I downloaded fisrst as silver member and tryed thereafter downloading the payed version. Than no downloading was possible at all. So I put seventy euro in the ashtray

Shiyu: basically because we don't care about errors in beta releases so much. Beta CD sets are basically fire-and-forget: Warly would run mkcd and upload whatever the hell it generated. We didn't really care if it was missing important packages or whatever because it was a beta. With the release version you only get one shot and people expect all the right stuff to be included, so the process has to be more careful.

tad: frankly, because no-one told me until release day that CD sets weren't going to be available at the same time as DVDs. Just like you guys, since I didn't hear anything, I just figured they would be as they had been before. Once the release came out and CDs weren't included and people started complaining, I had to go and talk to the release managers and QA to find out what was happening about the CDs before posting this explanation. I agree it would have been much better to post it before the release, and if I'd known, I would have.

awilliamson: thank you for your response! It's nice to know someone cares enough to provide a bit of real information… Have a nice day.

I found this a very helpful suggestion. I've now been able to download and install the DVD version and I'll make this my preferred method in future. Thanks.

I would add:

  1. you need 4.5G free disk space.
2. ideally create a disk partition for the download so that it's not part of the normal filesystem (overwritten during a full installation). 3. network installs via NFS to additional machines are quick & easy.

I'm still waiting for the Spring Flash version myself. Make no mistake, I appreciate quality control, but waiting is not easy.

Any word on when it will be available?

I'd like to know why this is happening all of a sudden /now/, that we have to wait for cd isos for so long. It hasn't happened before, AFAIK. I've always been able to d/l either/or, DVD or CD isos, at the same time at least as far back as 10.0 (and probably before).

I understand about the "Warly" situation; however, a release is a release, and should all be done at once, even if later.

With the early seeders debacle, 2007.1 is one that probably would've been better off being released later, with everything intact.

People /pay/ for the ability to download these things (which gets us into another rant, but I won't go there now).

Please, let's have it all together for 2008, shall we?

That's my take --

Thank you for hearing me out.

Brainspeaks - I am looking forward to the CD version. I did, however, find a DVD burner/player (that burns CDs as well) for $26 at Circuit City for those in the U.S.. There is free shipping with that as well. You might want to check it out.

In three days it will have been TWO MONTHS past the release of the distribution. Isn't that long enough to build the CD ISOs?

jfbiganos | 21.06.2007 at 10:53 AM
Time is long. Today we are the first day of the summer and still not of version CD of "the spring"! There remain 9 days................
