Which to use? I'm here again in Paris and in the States I was taught when you ask someone how they are, you say "Comment-allez vous?" - literally "How goes you?". But here very few people seem to use it, instead preferring "Ça va?", literally "It goes?", even in more formal situations where you would think they would use Comment-allez vous. Why?

My hypothesis: it's not the formality, or lack thereof, of the situation or the phrase. It's just the fact that "Ça va?" is much shorter and easier to say - two syllables versus the five of "Comment-allez vous?".

True? Je ne sais pas (I do not know) - I guess I will have to ask a native speaker.

Hi, as a french native speaker, here's what I can tell you... You will usually say: "Bonjour, comment allez vous ?" or "Salut, ça va ?". The first one is the "formal & polite" way, the second one, the "friendly" way. Usually you will use the first one when you would use the "vous" form when speaking to that person, and the second one when you would use the "tu" form. Luis

Hello, Like said above, "Ca va?" is informal and "Comment allez-vous?" is formal. If you hear people using "Ca va?" in formal circumstances, it is or because they want a relax atmosphere (pretty common in IT companies, for example) or because they ignore these kind of rules (some teenagers). Note that few people know where this expression comes from. It was originally a medical question at the time doctors had not many ways to evaluate the health of their patients.
