New Hardware Compatibility List project open for testing

We're pleased to announce that our new Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) system is open for testing! We have received many requests for a better HCL which allows user contributions. To fulfil this request, we have built a new hardware compatibility front end for our existing hardware database system. Current Mandriva releases already include all the tools for adding your system to our hardware database, and with the new HCL system, you can let other users know exactly how compatible your hardware is with Mandriva! Test the new system here. Please be aware the system is not finished and we are still working on adding features and more instructions, and improving the interface. Please direct any suggestions for improvements or features to the Requests and Mandriva Services forum in the Club forums. I will review all comments and suggestions there and pass them on to the HCL developers.

Why can't I login with my account (in http://hcl.mandriva.com/login/login) with my standard Mandriva login/pass ? Did I need a contrib account to login ?

yes, you need to register on the QA website : http://qa.mandriva.com

The contributor database is not yet linked with the club database.

Can I say it is truly unbelievable? It looks a bit like big brother though as all the specs of my laptop are there even though I had no idea it had been uploaded. But that is clearly the way to go. I look forward to seeing more of this.

You might have uploaded your laptop's specs a while ago and forgotten about it. The hardware database that the HCL works on top of has actually been around for a long time (at least since 10.1), as part of the Testzilla project. You probably hit the upload hardware menu item in harddrake some time in the past and then forgot about it. AFAIK we don't have anything that would cause it to be uploaded automatically.

How can we use hwdb_add_system on LE2005 ? It fails because it tries to contact hwdb.mandrakesoft.com

An official update was just released for 10.1 and 2005 which fixes this problem. You should get an update to the package hwdb-clients through MandrivaUpdate soon. Once you get that update, it will work.

Hi ! What is the use of the hwdb_add_system options ? --beginner, --auto, --expert, --testing ? What are they all ?

Hi, Someone asked me for a notebook working perfectly with mandriva.

There is no way to seach for the laptops in the database. I think this must be an option: Notebook, desktop, "blade", and so on

Do you agree ?

So is this posting how I report it?

I wish I could somehow add it as a component to my system configuration in the DB, so I could comment that it doesn't work. I can see that kppp will talk to it and it will respond, but when told to dial, it doesn't seem to "open the hookswitch". So no dial tone.

I also wonder why hwdb_add_system reports Vendor Code 32902? `lspci -vvn` reports 8086: 00:1f.6 Class 0703: 8086:24c6 (rev 01) Subsystem: 1014:0544

That's a common suggestion, yep - we are looking at a way to do it. Some systems are actually already reported: if you look at the results for a search in the "system information" category, you will see several model names, and you can then use the "see systems containing this component" feature to see how the entire system performs. But it would definitely be nicer to have a cleaner way to do this kind of search, we agree.
